Washington, D.C. (July 19, 2010) - Portsmouth Football Club released today a preliminary roster for the friendly against D.C. United. This international fixture will be played on Saturday, July 24 at RFK Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.

Among the players confirmed are English forwards Danny Webber and David Nugent. Webber ignited his professional career with Sheffield United, scoring 20 league goals for the Yorkshire club between 2005 and 2009 before signing for Pompey heading into the 2009-2010 Barclays Premier League campaign. Nugent set the English Championship alight during his time with Preston North End, scoring 33 league goals in 94 appearances at Deepdale from 2005-2007. Nugent has been capped at the senior international level for England, and since signing for Portsmouth in 2007 he has featured for Pompey 34 times. Last season Nugent was loaned to Burnley in the Barclays Premier League, scoring six times in 30 appearances for the Clarets.

Joining Webber and Nugent are veteran midfielders Michael Brown and Tommy Smith. Both men were members of the 2010 FA Cup side that narrowly fell to Chelsea at Wembley Stadium. Brown has featured for a variety of Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, Fulham, and Wigan Athletic before joining Pompey in 2009. Meanwhile, Smith rose to prominence with Watford from 2006 until 2009, where the playmaker scored 27 goals in 124 league appearances. Irish defender Marc Wilson will also be joining Portsmouth in the Nation's Capital, alongside fellow defenders Matt Richie and Iceland's Herman Hreidarsson. Midfielder Haydon Mullins, a stalwart for West Ham United and Crystal Palace during the last decade, will also make the flight across the Atlantic.

Portsmouth is the seventh English side to play an international friendly at RFK Stadium against the Black-and-Red, and like Leeds United, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest, the south coast club has a rich history in English football. Founded in 1888, Portsmouth is affectionately known to its supporters as Pompey - a reference to the maritime tradition of the Royal Navy port town. Though the club was recently relegated from the Barclays Premier League and will begin play in the nPower Championship next season, Portsmouth reached the 2010 FA Cup final and lost narrowly to Chelsea by a 1-0 scoreline.

In 2008, Pompey hoisted the FA Cup for the second time in its history, defeating Cardiff City 1-0 at Wembley Stadium. Portsmouth also won the prestigious domestic competition in 1939 and the club claimed the English First Division title in 1949 and 1950. Pompey plays its matches at legendary Fratton Park, the team's home since 1898 that is widely regarded as one of the most intimate stadiums in Europe.
