Stockton Ports News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Stockton Ports got off to a fast start and never looked back on Wednesday night at Municipal Stadium. The Boys of Banner Island scored six runs in the top of the first inning on their way to an 11-1 victory over the San Jose Giants, their most lopsided win of the season. With the victory, the Ports reduced their magic number to five to clinch a First Half title.
Giants starter Conner Menez (2-4) would not make it out of the first inning. Brallan Perez opened the game with a double and, two batters later, Skye Bolt walked and Jonah Heim singled to load the bases. After Dairon Blanco drew a bases-loaded walk, Menez got Will Toffey to pop out to shortstop for the second out of the inning. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Luke Persico delivered a bases-clearing double to right field that made it a 4-0 lead. Nate Mondou followed with an RBI single to make it 5-0 and after Luis Barrera singled, Perez came up for a second time and reached on a fielding error committed by shortstop C.J Hinojosa that ran the Ports lead to 6-0 and knocked Menez from the contest.
Menez would suffer the loss, going two-thirds of an inning and allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits.
San Jose got its lone run of the contest in the bottom of the first. Ports starter Brian Howard (6-3) gave up a one-out double to Jalen Miller who scored three batters later on an RBI single by Sandro Fabian. Howard would strike out Wander Franco to end the inning, the first of 10 consecutive batters set down and 16 of his next 18.
Howard would go on to earn the win, tossing seven innings and allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven.
The Ports added to their lead beginning in the fourth. Bolt drew a walk and scored two batters later on a fielder's choice force play hit into by Blanco to make it 7-1. It was the lone run allowed by Giants reliever Peter Lannoo, who went three innings and allowed three hits while walking three.
Jeff Burke took over for Lannoo in the fourth inning and would allow four runs in two-and-two-thirds innings worked, the first coming in the fifth inning on a Bolt sacrifice fly. Stockton scored two runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Mondou and an RBI single by Barrera. Stockton's final run came in the seventh as Bolt tripled with one out to knock Burke from the contest and scored on an RBI groundout induced by new Giants pitcher Orleny Quiroz to make it 11-1. Quiroz would work the final two-and-two-thirds innings for the Giants without allowing a run.
Brendan Butler and Andrew Tomasovich worked a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively, to close out the game for Stockton.
The Ports will try for their third series sweep of the season when they wrap up their series with San Jose in a matinee on Thursday afternoon. Matt Milburn (2-2, 4.91 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Raffi Vizcaino (3-3, 4.37 ERA). First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m. PDT.
