Modesto Nuts News Release
Modesto, CA. - Two errors in the eighth led to three unearned runs and a 3-1 loss for the Modesto Nuts against the Visalia Rawhide on Wednesday night at John Thurman Field.
Colin Rodgers was dynamite in his start for the Nuts (25-34). He tossed a season-best six shutout innings. The southpaw allowed just three hits with five strikeouts and no walks. He was perfect through the first three innings and retired the final six he faced.
Nick Zammarelli had given the Nuts an early lead when he singled home a run with two outs in the fourth. Kevin McCanna (W, 4-1) worked seven strong innings allowing just the one run on seven hits with five strikeouts in his start for the Rawhide (31-28).
Things unraveled in the eighth. Jack Anderson (L, 1-3) took the ball for the Nuts. He surrendered a single before striking out Dominic Miroglio. Luis Silverio tagged a line drive right at shortstop Bryson Brigman who muffed the liner and allowed it to sneak past him allowing Silverio to reach. After a fielder's choice and a stolen base put two runners in scoring position with two outs, Stephen Smith drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-RBI single. After a throwing error by third baseman Joe Rizzo extended the inning further, Camden Duzenack added a RBI single for good measure.
In the ninth, the Nuts threatened with two runners in scoring position. Rizzo and Anthony Jimenez each singled to put two runners aboard. They moved into scoring position after a passed ball with one out. Tyler Mark (S, 1/1) was unfazed and struck out the final two batters to end the threat and give the Rawhide the victory.
The Nuts will try to avoid the sweep on Thursday night in the three-game series finale against the Rawhide. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:50 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC.
