Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports came from behind to avoid back-to-back series losses for the first time in 2018 on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The San Jose Giants scored four runs in the top of the first inning but saw that lead fall by the wayside as a pair of home runs helped Stockton to an 8-5 win and a split of a four-game set.

The Giants came out of the gate strong versus Ports starter Zack Erwin. With a runner at third and one out, Wander Franco doubled to right-center to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. After a walk put two aboard, Gio Brusa hit a three-run homer to right field that made it a 4-0 Giants advantage.

Stockton got three runs back in the bottom of the third on three straight extra-base hits. With one on, Luis Barrera tripled to drive in Stockton's first run of the game. Back-to-back RBI doubles ensued from Nate Mondou and Luke Persico that cut the Giants lead to 4-3.

San Jose got a run back in the top of the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single by Sandro Fabian to make it 5-3. It was the final run allowed by Erwin, who would not factor into the decision after allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings worked.

Giants starter DJ Myers worked into the sixth and gave up a leadoff double to Persico. Two batters later with one out, Chase Calabuig knocked in his first California League RBI with a single to right field to cut the San Jose lead to 5-4. Myers was lifted at that point for Peter Lannoo (1-4), who gave up a two-run homer to Sandber Pimentel that vaulted the Ports in front 6-5.

Myers would also be rendered a no-decision, going 5.1 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out five.

Lannoo would finish the game for San Jose and give up a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. With one on and two out, Santiago Chavez homered to left to make it an 8-5 Stockton advantage. It was Chavez' first home run of the season and just his third career big fly.

Lannoo would suffer the loss, going two-and-two-thirds innings and allowing three runs on four hits.

Will Gilbert (4-2) took over for the Ports in the sixth and worked two perfect innings on his way to picking up the win. After a scoreless eighth inning worked by Andrew Tomasovich, Trey Cochran-Gill (SV, 1) came on to work the ninth and pitched around a pair of infield singles, getting Heath Quinn, the possible-tying run, to hit into a fielder's choice groundout to end the ballgame and notch his first save in a Ports uniform.

After splitting a four-game set with the Giants, the Ports travel to Modesto for a four-game series with the Nuts. Right-hander Kyle Friedrichs (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his first start of the season for Stockton after being transferred from Double-A Midland. Modesto will counter with right-hander Reggie McClain (3-6, 4.61 ERA). First pitch at John Thurman Field is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
