Modesto Nuts News Release
Visalia, CA. - It only took two singles to give the Modesto Nuts a 2-0 win and a four-game series victory over the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday night at Recreation Park.
Kyle Lewis walked to start the second inning. He scored the first run of the game for the Nuts (38-54; 8-14) when Bobby Honeyman singled him home with his first California League hit. Luis Liberato added a RBI single in the third and that was all for the Nuts' offense against Rawhide (47-45; 10-12) starter Cole Stapler (L, 0-1).
In Stapler's California League debut, he gave up just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Ljay Newsome (W, 5-6) heaved five strong frames. He worked around a first-inning double. In the third, he stranded the tying runs in scoring position and cruised the rest of the night. The righty struck out four, did not walk a batter and allowed just three hits.
Austin Hutchison retired seven in a row out of the 'pen. He worked 2 2/2 innings without allowing a hit. Seth Elledge (S, 9/9) polished off the series-clinching victory by recording the final four outs.
The Nuts head home to start a four-game set with the Stockton Ports on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:50 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC.
