Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports kicked off a critical three-game series with the San Jose Giants with a bang on Monday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Stockton handed San Jose its largest margin of defeat on the season, plating 13 runs in 14 hits in a 13-2 rout of the Giants to move two games ahead of San Jose for the final playoff spot in the North Division.
The Ports started to run away with the contest in the bottom of the first by sending 11 men to the plate and scoring six runs. With two on and nobody out, Yairo Munoz doubled to left to give the Ports a 1-0 lead. With runners at second and third, Jake Nottingham followed with a sac-fly to make it 2-0. Tyler Marincov came up next and hit a two-run homer to left on the first pitch he saw to run the lead to 4-0. After B.J. Boyd walked, Michael Soto and Trent Gilbert reached on back-to-back singles to load the bases. After Santiago Chavez struck out, Giants starter Luis Ysla (2-6) was lifted for Christian Jones. Brett Vertigan then came up for a second time and delivered a two-run single to make it a 6-0 lead.
Ysla suffered the loss, going two-thirds of an inning and allowing six runs on six hits.
Stockton added to its lead in the second. Munoz reached base to start the inning on an error committed by third baseman Brandon Bednar and scored two batters later on a sac-fly by Marincov to make it a 7-0 score. Jones allowed two more runs in the fourth inning. With two on and two out, B.J. Boyd delivered a two-run single to center to increase the lead to 9-0. Jones went three innings for San Jose and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits.
Ports starter Raul Alcantara went four scoreless innings and allowed two hits while striking out two. Kyle Finnegan (7-8) set the side down in order in the fifth. In the sixth, he surrendered a leadoff double to Ty Ross, who scored two batters later on an RBI single by Christian Arroyo to put the Giants on the board at 9-1.
The Ports got into double figures in the run column in the seventh when Soto led off with a home run to left off Giants reliever Tyler Rogers, ballooning the lead to 10-1. It was the only run and only hit allowed by Rogers in his three-and-a-third innings of work.
San Jose scored its final run in the top of the eighth. Finnegan issued a leadoff walk to Skyler Stromsmoe, who went on to score later in the inning on a throwing error committed by the second baseman Gilbert to make it a 10-2 game. The run was unearned for Finnegan, who went on to earn the win after going three-and-a-third innings in relief.
Stockton put an exclamation point on the win in the eighth. With two on and two out, Boyd hit a three-run homer to right off Giants reliever Dan Slania to make it a 13-2 contest. Soto, the next batter, was hit by a pitch, at which point Slania was ejected by home plate umpire Patrick Sharshel and the benches emptied. No punches were thrown, but John Nogowski, who was not in the lineup, was ejected for Stockton.
Sam Roberts pitched the final inning-and-two-thirds to close out the game for the Ports.
Stockton and San Jose play the middle game of their three-game series on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Dylan Covey (6-7, 3.93 ERA) makes the start for the Ports, opposed by Giants right-hander Jordan Johnson (1-1, 4.63 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
