LAKE ELSINORE, Ca. - For the second straight night, the Ports managed just four hits as they dropped their fourth straight with a 2-1 loss to the Storm at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore on Saturday evening.
The Storm (56-39) opened the scoring with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the second. With two outs and nobody on, Carlos Luis hit a solo home run to straight-away center field off Ports' starter Mitch Myers to give Lake Elsinore a 1-0 lead.
The Ports (33-62) wasted no time in responding, manufacturing a run in the top of the third inning. Junior Perez reached on a bunt single to start the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error when Lake Elsinore starter Victor Lizarraga made an errant throw to first that ended up down the right field line. After a sacrifice bunt by Danny Bautista moved Perez to third, he scored on a sacrifice fly to left center by Shane McGuire to tie the game at one.
On back-to-back hits in the fourth, though, the Storm reclaimed the advantage. Juan Zabala led off with a triple off the wall in center field and scored with James Wood singled to left field to put Lake Elsinore on top again 2-1.
The Ports struggled with runners in scoring position on Saturday, going 0-for-6 in such situations. Stockton had runners on second in the fifth and seventh inning with two outs but could not come up with a base hit to tie the game. Stockton was retired in order in the final two innings.
Lizarraga (5-2) got the win for Lake Elsinore, allowing just the one unearned run on two hits over five innings with four strikeouts. Myers (4-8) tough the tough-luck loss for Stockton surrendering just two runs on four hits over seven innings with six strikeouts. Alan Mundo faced the minimum over the final two innings to pick up his third save of the season.
Having dropped nine of their last ten the Ports will try to salvage the final game of the series in Lake Elsinore, as well as their nine-game road trip, with first pitch at 4:05 pm on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond.
