Storm Win in Rout, Get 3rd Straight Win against the Ports
July 30, 2022 - California League (CalL)
Lake Elsinore Storm News Release
Tonight, the Lake Elsinore Storm illustrated exactly what a complete and playoff-bound baseball team looks like. Not only did they score a ludicrous 17 runs but they also shut out the Stockton Ports, limiting them to just 4 hits and 7 total men on base.
Starting the night on the mound was the same man who started on the night of the first no-hitter in Storm history; Garrett Hawkins. Hawkins would go just 4 innings but would strike out 9 batters, having 75% of his total outs coming by way of the K. Three other pitchers would take the mound tonight. Hazahel Quijada would make his first appearance since his IL stint, striking out 2 and not allowing a single hit. Duncan Snyder and Ben Miller would both go two innings, allowing only 1 hit, and striking out at least 2 batters. Storm pitching would finish the night with 16 total strikeouts.
At the plate, the Storm's bats were hot from the start. 4 players would reach base in the first inning alone and 2 runs would score. In the very next inning, doubles from James Wood and Albert Fabian would score 2 more. They would continue their run-scoring streak in the third when Carlos Luis, who would go 3-4 on the night with 4 RBIs, began the inning with a double and would come home on a Juan Zabala sacrifice fly.
They would really put their metaphorical petal to the imaginary metal when in the 6th, after two outs were quickly recorded, the bases would load on two walks and a hit batsman. A Marcos Castañon single would score Nerwilian Cedeño, and yet another Carlos Luis double would clear the bases and make it a 9-to-nothing advantage for the hometown team.
They wouldn't let up in the 7th either. Two singles and an error would score a run and put two guys on with no one out. Cedeño would follow with his second of three walks on the night, he would get on base 5 total times tonight, and James Wood followed his at bat with a single directly into centerfield, scoring two more runs. Albert Fabian would then put his signature exclamation point on this collective, monstrous offensive performance by hitting a towering three-run home run over the large wall in right field, putting the Storm up 15-0.
Lake Elsinore would score two more runs in the ninth inning, one of which even occurred on a double play from Fabian. But, it was just that kind of night for the Storm. A night where even their mistakes became runs and their pitching simply couldn't be touched. On a picturesque summer night, the Storm won their third straight game and kept themselves just one game behind the Fresno Grizzlies for most wins in the entire California League.
They will attempt to duplicate tonight's performance for their fourth straight win tomorrow night at 5:05 PM.
