Stockton Ports News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Stockton Ports needed to withstand a late Bakersfield Blaze rally on Friday night to come away with a 3-2 victory at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Stockton, playing its second one-run game in as many days, scored three runs in the sixth inning and made the runs stand up over the final frames.

Ports starter James Simmons (1-0) and Blaze starter James Allen (2-5) each tossed five scoreless innings with Simmons allowing three hits in that span while Allen yielded two.

The Ports opened the scoring in the sixth as Dusty Robinson worked a walk to start the inning and Bobby Crocker doubled to right to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Addison Russell came up next and lined an RBI single to center to score Robinson and make it 1-0. After Max Muncy drew a walk, Allen was lifted for Jimmy Moran, who got Tony Thompson to hit into a fielder's choice where the force out was recorded at home plate. Antonio Lamas came up next and hit a two-run double to left that scored Russell and Muncy and gave Stockton a 3-0 advantage.

Allen was charged with all three runs that scored in the inning and would go on to suffer the loss, allowing four hits while walking three and striking out four.

Simmons tossed seven shutout innings for the Ports and retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced. Simmons picked up his first win of the season, allowing four hits while striking out six.

T.J. Walz took over in the eighth inning and allowed a leadoff double to Juan Duran. After a groundout advanced Duran to third, Juan Perez hit a sac-fly to center that got the Blaze on the board at 3-1. Walz then allowed a double to Yovan Gonzalez, at which time Jose Macias (SV, 3) was brought in from the bullpen. Mcias got Ryan Wright to fly to right to end the frame.

Macias came back out to pitch the ninth and Yorman Rodriguez led off with a bunt single. Marquez Smith followed with a double to left-center that put runners at second and third with nobody out. Macias would go on to strike out two of the next three batters. Steve Selsky struck out for the first out. Kyle Waldrop followed by flying out to left, a sac-fly that scored Rodriguez and made it a 3-2 game. With the tying run at second and two outs, Macias completed the save by getting Duran to strike out swinging to end the ballgame.

The Ports and Blaze play the third game of their four-game set on Saturday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Newcomer Shaeffer Hall (0-0, 0.0 ERA) makes his California League debut for the Ports, opposed by Blaze right-hander Mike Dennhardt (2-3, 3.33 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. PDT.
