Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Quakes starter Lindsey Caughel struck out nine over six innings, but could not keep the visiting Visalia Rawhide at bay, as Rancho fell to its California League rival, 4-2, on Friday night at LoanMart Field.
Caughel (L, 1-2) gave up four earned runs on 10 hits, but walked none in his third start with the Quakes after being promoted from Single-A Great Lakes.
Down a pair in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Quakes had runners on the corners with O'Koyea Dickson at the plate. Seth Simmons came in to face him and needed just four pitches to get out of the inning. Dickson grounded into a 4-6-3 double to end the threat and the Quakes' best chance to erase the deficit.
The Rawhide put themselves ahead for good when David Nick hit his second home run in as many nights. The left fielder belted a two-run shot off Caughel over the wall in left to make it 4-1 in the fourth.
For the Quakes, Jonathan Garcia led the offense with a 2-for-4 night. Garcia smoked a solo home run into the trees in left-center to bring Rancho within two in the bottom of the fourth, his third straight game with a round-tripper.
Dodgers infielder Jerry Hairston made his first rehab appearance with the Quakes and went 0-for-3 while manning third base for Rancho, playing six innings.
Conrad Flynn picked up the win in relief for Visalia, allowing just one earned run on two hits over four innings. Flynn (W, 4-2) took over for starter Andrew Barbosa, who struck out three and gave up one run on three hits in three innings.
Visalia reliever Jake Barrett earned his Cal League-best 12th save of the season, sitting down the Quakes in order in the ninth.
The loss drops the Quakes below the .500 mark in the standings at 23-24 on the season, but they will have a chance to get even on Saturday night. Left-hander Jarrett Martin (1-5, 4.70 ERA) gets the call for Rancho, while Kyle Schepel (2-1, 2.50 ERA) takes the mound for Visalia.
