Portland Winterhawks News Release
Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
The Portland Winterhawks take on two of the top teams in the league this week with the Calgary Hitmen coming to town Wednesday, then two games this weekend in Kelowna against the Rockets. The Hitmen, coached by former Winterhawk player and coach Mike Williamson, have 70 points on the season, the second-highest total in the Eastern Conference.
Then Friday and Saturday, the Hawks head to Kelowna for a pair of games against the Rockets, whose 84 points this season are second in the WHL only to Portland's 89. The Rockets have won 17 of their last 19 games, with points in the two losses as both games went to overtime. The two teams split back-to-back games in Portland in September.
The Hawks posted another shutout Saturday, defeating Spokane 4-0. Mac Carruth set the franchise record for shutouts in a season with six, and the 10 he now has in his career are also a franchise record. It was also the Hawks' 11th blanking of the season, extending the franchise record for a single season.
Not only do the Hawks have three of the league's top-four scorers overall (Nic Petan with 93 points, Brendan Leipsic with 90 and Ty Rattie with 73), but two of the top-three rookie scorers as well. Oliver Bjorkstrand leads all first-year players with 43 points this season, while Seth Jones is tied for second with 41 points. Jones's 41 points leads all rookie defensemen, and is fourth among all WHL blueliners.
