Portland Winterhawks News Release

Hawks Happenings On The Ice:

With just 10 games left in the regular season, the Hawks are in a three-way battle for top spot in the Western Conference, and the league's best overall record. The Tri-City Americans lead the conference with 91 points, while the Hawks and Kamloops Blazers are both tied with 90 points.

Adding to the drama is that the Hawks play those two teams in four of their next five games. The Blazers are in town for a game tomorrow at the Rose Garden at 7 p.m., then the Hawks travel to Kennewick, WA, to take on the Americans Friday night. After a game at home against Seattle Saturday, the Hawks host Tri-Cities Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Garden, then travel to Kamloops for a game next Tuesday.

The Eastern Conference's Edmonton Oil Kings are also in the mix for the league's best record, with 89 points. The team that finishes with the best regular season record is awarded the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy, and of course gets home ice advantage through the playoffs. The Hawks have finished atop the league twice: in 1979-80 with 107 points, and the 1997-98 Memorial Cup season with 111 points.

Ty Rattie leads the WHL with 26 power play goals, seven more than the next highest total. It's also the most by a WHL player since Eric Fehr had 31 for Brandon in the 2004-05 season.

Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:

The famous San Diego Chicken will be at the Winterhawks game Sunday when the team hosts the Tri-City Americans at 5 p.m. in the Rose Garden. The Chicken's managing director is available for interviews this week in advance of the game.
