Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
The Winterhawks will be without four players when the team hosts the Kamloops Blazers Wednesday, as Ryan Johansen, Nino Niederreiter, Brad Ross and Troy Rutkowski will be playing in the 2010 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.The game will take place at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, ON, beginning with a skills competition on Tuesday followed by the game on Wednesday. The rosters were selected by the 30 NHL General Managers with NHL Central Scouting. The game can be seen on the NHL Network.
The Winterhawks have 174 goals in 47 games this season, just two shy of their total from the entire 2008-09 season. The team currently has five players averaging at least one point per game: Chris Francis (51 points in 47 games), Brad Ross (50 points in 47 games), Johansen (47 points in 47 games), Niederreiter (44 points in 41 games) and Luke Walker (36 points in 36 games).
After missing six games while playing at the World Junior Championship, Niederreiter has picked up right where he left off. He has goals in three of four games since returning, and has points in six of his last seven games, dating back to before the tournament.
Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:
Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and in the spirit of his legacy of service, all Winterhawks players will be participating in community projects this week. Today players will volunteering at Sunshine Division from 4 - 8 p.m. and Gospel Union Mission from 6 -9 p.m. Players will also be at Habitat For Humanity Tuesday at Thursday from 9 a.m. - Noon both days. Mascot hockey bragging rights are on the line Saturday, January 30 as the Portland Winterhawks host their annual Mascot Night, presented by Comcast, at the Rose Garden. Tom-A-Hawk is inviting his mascot friends to help entertain fans of all ages, and the night will also feature a mascot hockey game during the second intermission.
