Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
Portland goaltender Ian Curtis earned his first career shutout Saturday when he turned away all 22 Seattle shots in the Winterhawks' 5-0 win in Kent. It was the second time in team history Portland opened the season with a shutout, previously doing it on September 28, 1978 when they beat Seattle (then known as the Breakers) 5-0. With the shutout, Curtis is the WHL's nominee for CHL goaltender of the week. Including the preseason, Portland has now won six consecutive games, and scored at least five goals in each of the last five contests.
After a road game in Tri-Cities Friday, the Hawks will host their 2009-10 home opener Saturday in a rematch with the Thunderbirds. The Hawks have traditionally fared well in their home openers, with 20 wins in 32 games.
Last season's starting goalie, Kurtis Mucha, is still in camp with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, and the Winterhawks are expected to find out in the coming days whether he will be returning to the team for his final season of WHL eligibility. Brett Ponich returned to the Winterhawks Friday (and was named captain upon his return) and was on the ice Saturday for Portland. Travis Ehrhardt remains in camp with the Detroit Red Wings after signing a free agent contract during the summer.
Killian Hutt has been assigned to the St. Albert Steel of the Alberta Junior Hockey League as he continues to recover from offseason surgery to remove a cyst from his lower body.
