Portland takes first game with Northwest rivals

TACOMA, Wash. - Will Venable was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Cesar Ramos turned in his sharpest outing of the season to help the Portland Beavers win for the seventh time in their last nine games by beating the Tacoma Rainiers 4-2 Saturday night at Cheney Stadium.

Venable, who has hit safely in six straight and in 16 of his last 17 games, logged a pair of RBI doubles, and the Beavers (39-35) got RBI singles from Justin Huber and Tom King to win their fourth consecutive game.

Ramos (7-6) struck out five and limited the Rainiers (38-37) to two runs (1 earned) and three hits over a season-high seven innings for the Beavers, who backed him with 12 hits.

Adam Bass and Wil Ledezma combined to toss a scoreless eighth and Edwin Moreno closed the door in the ninth for his sixth save.

Brian Myrow had a pair of hits and King, who was 4-for-36 over his previous 18 games, doubled twice among his three hits.

Shawn Garrett had a two-run single in the fourth inning for the Rainiers, who came into the game having won seven of their previous nine games.

The loss went to Sean White (4-8), who matched his season high with 11 hits allowed and suffered his fifth straight defeat by giving up four runs across six innings.
