Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Craig Stansberry was 2-for-3, including a leadoff double that sparked a decisive four-run rally in the seventh inning, and the Portland Beavers earned a series victory by coming back to defeat the Fresno Grizzlies 4-3 Monday afternoon at PGE Park.
Down 3-0 and limited to just two hits through the first six innings, the Beavers (5-7) overtook the Grizzlies by sending eight men to the plate during the four-run bottom of the seventh. Jack Cust's RBI double scored Stansberry, and Royce Huffman scored on a fielder's choice groundout. Pinch-hitter Adam Shabala then tied it with an RBI single, and Vince Sinisi scored the go-ahead run on a sac fly to right by Oscar Robles.
The win netted the Beavers, who won three of four against the Grizzlies, their first series victory of the season.
Scott Strickland (2-1) worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win. Leo Rosales retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save.
Scott McClain, Kevin Frandsen and Dan Ortmeier each hit solo homers for the Grizzlies (7-5). All three solo shots came against starter Ryan Ketchner, who otherwise had an effective outing. Ketchner struck out six, including four over the first two innings, and gave up five hits in 5 2/3 innings.
McClain's home run started the scoring in the second inning, and Fresno padded its lead with two additional home runs in the sixth.
Fresno starter Travis Blackley was sharp - limiting Portland to just two hits over the first six innings - before getting into a jam in the seventh, allowing a leadoff double to Stansberry and a single to Huffman prior to giving way to reliever Patrick Misch, who was charged with three runs in the loss.
Portland had a chance to add to its lead in the eighth, but left the bases loaded.
The Beavers open a four-game series with the Sacramento River Cats Tuesday night at PGE Park. First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
NOTES: The start of the game was delayed by 19 minutes due to light pre-game showers ... the temperature was 46 degrees at game time ... Monday was the first of five Art & Science of Baseball School Days this season ... also on Monday, Fresno starter Tim Lincecum was named the PCL Pitcher of the Week and Tucson's Jamie D'Antona was named the league's Batter of the Week ... three of Portland's five wins have come when its opponent scores first.
