Portland Powers Past T-Birds

Portland - The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 7-3 in a Saturday afternoon game at Memorial Coliseum in Portland behind four goals from Sven Bartschi.

The T-Birds are currently in ninth place in the Western Conference Playoff standings. They are point behind the eighth place Everett Silvertips pending their game against the Tri-City Americans Saturday night in Everett.

Bartschi scored a shorthanded breakaway goal at 15:24 of the first period to put the Winterhawks up 1-0.

Portland outshot Seattle 10-8 in the first period.

Connor Sanvido tied the game 1-1 at 7:45 of the second period. Sanvido took a shot that Portland goalie Brendan Burke stopped. Sanvido got his own rebound and beat Burke with a second shot hit. Sanvido's sixth goal of the season was unassisted.

Portland (45-15-3-1) took a 2-1 lead on a power-play goal by Cam Reid at 8:45 of the second. Brendan Leipsic had the only assist.

Bartschi scored at 10:38 of the second to extend the Winterhawks lead to 3-1. Marcel Noebels and Joe Morrow had the assists.

Seattle (21-40-1-1) cut the lead to one goal at 13:25 of the second when Seth Swenson scored a power-play goal. Shea Theodore sent the puck behind the Portland net to Connor Honey. Honey centered the puck to Swenson in the high slot. Swenson one-timed Honey's pass and beat Burke over the glove and just under the cross bar.

Portland got the two-goal lead back at 13:56 of the second when Ty Rattie scored. Noebels had the only assist.

The Winterhawks led 28-22 in shots after two periods.

Bartschi got a hat trick when he scored shorthanded at 2:29 of the third period. Rattie assisted on the goal.

Bartschi made it a 6-2 lead for Portland at 10:44 of the third when he scored a power-play goal. Morrow and Derrick Pouliot had the assists.

Burke Gallimore struck at 11:22 of the third to cut the Portland lead to three goals. Gallimore beat Burke high off assists from Braeden Laroque and Jake Doty.

Pouliot scored at 16:25 of the third to make it a 7-3 Portland lead. Nic Petan and Chase De Leo had the assists.

Portland outshot Seattle 47-28 in the game.

Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard stopped 40 of 47 shots and his record is now 21-33-1-1.

Burke made 25 saves on 28 shots and his record is now 6-2-1-1.

The T-Birds travel to Prince George to face the Cougars on Tuesday and Wednesday at CN Centre. Both games are at 7pm.

The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
