
Wheat Kings Score 6-2 Win over 'Canes

Brandon, MB.-- The Brandon Wheat Kings kicked off the month of March in fine fashion Friday night, scoring a 6-2 victory over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes before over 3,900 fans at Westman Communications Group Place.
Brenden Walker scored twice as the Wheat Kings scored three times on their first four shots en route to their third straight victory.
With the win, the Wheat Kings moved past Regina and into sole possession of seventh place in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference. The Pats, who were idle on Friday night, will play the first of two straight games against Brandon on Saturday night at the Brandt Centre in Regina.
The game capped an impressive home stand for the Wheat Kings, who went 5-0-0-1 over the past thirteen days, collecting eleven of a possible 12 points to solidify their grip on a club record 12th straight playoff appearance.
"We know we need the points every game and we just have to keep going forward," Walker toldBruce Luebke onCKLQ's post game show. "We're a team that's very capable of going very well so we have to stay confident and keep playing as well as we can and I think we're going to just do fine."
Bruno Mrazhad a goal and an assist Friday night, with singles coming off the sticks ofDaniel Asham, Paul CiarelliandBrodie Melnychuk. Alessio Bertaggiaadded three assists while former Victoria RoyalKevin Sundherhad a pair in his first game in two weeks.
Jaimen Yakubowski andMacoy Erkamps replied for the Hurricanes, who trailed 3-2 and 5-2 at the period breaks.
Corbin Boes made 34 saves in the Brandon net whileDamien Ketlo stopped 32 shots for Lethbridge.
Special teams were big in this game as the Wheat Kings scored two second period powerplay goals while managing to kill off all five Lethbridge powerplays on the night.
The 35-26-1-3 Wheat Kings, who were 9-2-0-1 in February, will now play back to back road games in Regina. Including Saturday night's game, Brandon will travel to Regina on Wednesday night before returning home for a huge 2-game weekend series against the visiting Saskatoon Blades on Friday and Saturday nights.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers' quarterbackBuck Pierce will be dropping the puck before Friday's game and theStanley Cup will be on hand the following night.
