
Portland Pirates Trim Roster by Five

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates today announced the release of five players from training camp. Forwards Darik Angeli, Matt Leitner, and Tony Turegon, as well as defenseman Brad Richard, were all released from their tryout contracts. Additionally, goalie Colin Stevens has been assigned to the Manchester Monarchs of the ECHL.
Angeli, a 6-foot-3, 198 pound right wing from Lakewood, Colorado, played in both preseason games this season for Portland. The 24 year-old attended Florida Panthers Rookie Camp last month and was signed to a tryout contract by Portland. Angeli played four seasons of NCAA Division I Men's Hockey at Ohio State University, registering 26 goals and 26 assists for 52 points in 117 games for the Buckeyes. He will report to the training camp of the ECHL's Manchester Monarchs.
Leitner, a 5-foot-9, 173 pound center from Los Alimatos, California, played in both preseason game for Portland. The 24 year-old also attended Florida Panthers Rookie Camp last month and was with the Pirates on a tryout. Leitner is the school record holder for career assists at Minnesota State University, amassing 113 helpers in 158 games. He also scored 49 goals and 162 points for the Mavericks. He will also report to Manchester Monarchs training camp.
Richard, a 5-foot-10, 195 pound defenseman from New Bedford, Massachusetts, played two preseason games with the Pirates and scored one goal. The third year pro played 24 games with the ECHL's Alaska Aces last season, scoring eight goals and five assists for 13 points. He also made his AHL debut as well, skating in 12 games for the Iowa Wild, notching a goal and an assist for two points. He scored 30 points in his rookie season with Alaska in 2013-14, helping the Aces win the 2014 Kelly Cup. Before turning pro, Richard played four seasons of NCAA Division III Men's Hockey for the Hobart College Statesmen. Richard will attend ECHL training camp with Alaska.
Turgeon, a 6-foot-4, 228 pound left wing from Grand Forks, North Dakota, played in both preseason games for the Pirates after signing a tryout deal. The 26 year-old third year pro has split the last two seasons between the AHL and the ECHL. He has played in a combined 23 games for the AHL's San Antonio Rampage over the past two seasons, and 26 total games with the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones and Allen Americans. Prior to turning pro, Turgeon played three seasons of NCAA Division I Men's Hockey with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks. Turgeon will attend ECHL training camp with the Manchester Monarchs.
Stevens, 6-foot-1 175 pound goalie from Niskayuna, New York, begins his pro career this season after signing an Entry Level Contract with the Florida Panthers on March 20. The 22 year-old rookie turns pro after completing a four-year NCAA Division I Men's Hockey career with the Union College Dutchmen. In 2013-14, he backstopped Union to its first national championship in school history, posting a 28-4-2 record and a 2.05 goals against average, a 0.929 save percentage and six shutouts. Stevens will join the Monarchs in time for their training camp.
Portland's regular season opener will be at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Sunday, October 11 against the Providence Bruins at 3:05 p.m.
