Portland rallied with 4 runs on 2 hits in the 8th inning to take a 6-3 win from the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the first meeting of the year Friday night at Gill Stadium.
First baseman Mike O'Keefe doubled home two runs off relief pitcher Dan Jackson (3-6), second baseman Joe Kilburg singled home a run, and shortstop Raul Nieves also scored in the decisive inning.
The Fisher Cats were held scoreless by knuckleballer Charlie Zink until centerfielder Justin Singleton led off the 5th with a homer. Singleton (3-for-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI) added a two-run homer off reliever Jason Howell in the 7th inning to give New Hampshire its first lead, at 3-2. Singleton takes over the team lead with 7 home runs.
The game was delayed an hour and 24 minutes at the start because of rain. Portland took an early 2-0 lead against starter Derek Lee. Center fielder Eric Johnson had an RBI single in the 3rd inning, and Jeff Bailey singled home another run in the 4th.
Howell (3-2) settled down, and worked through the 8th to earn the win. Joe Nelson pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 9th save.
The teams play again tomorrow afternoon at 1:05pm with Jerome Gamble (3-2) starting for the Sea Dogs and Cameron Reimers (6-1) goes for the Fisher Cats.
