Altoona Curve News Release

The Altoona Curve has announced the following roster moves effective Friday, May 28th:

SS Brandon Chaves has been placed on the Disabled List with torn ligaments in his left knee and C Chris Snusz has been promoted to Triple-A Nashville. To take their spots on the 23-man roster, the Curve has received C Rudy Pena from Lynchburg (A) and INF Mike Cockrell from Hickory (A).

***Chaves will miss the remainder of the season after suffering torn ligaments in his left knee in a collision with Reading first baseman Ryan Howard on Tuesday night. The switch-hitting shortstop hit .222 with one HR and 15 RBI in 40 games for the Curve.

***Snusz served as a backup catcher for the Curve and hit .226 in nine games. He was behind the plate for six of pitcher Bryan Bullington's nine starts, including Wednesday afternoon's 6-3 win over Reading.

***Pena, 24, is in his ninth professional season and second as a member of the Pirates' organization after signing as a minor league free agent in January 2003. The native of the Dominican Republic appeared in seven games for High Class-A Lynchburg this season, batting .167 (4-for-24) with one HR and three RBI. He will be making his Double-A debut.

***Cockrell, 22, joins the Curve from Low Class-A Hickory where he was batting .258 with 3 HR and 24 RBI in 31 games. Cockrell was the Pirates' 33rd round selection in the 2000 June draft out of Los Angeles Harbor (CA) J.C.

The Curve will open a four-game series Friday night against the New Britain Rock Cats (AA-Twins) at Blair County Ballpark. Right-hander Ian Snell (3-3, 2.66) will start for the Curve against New Britain righty Scott Baker (2-0, 0.60) in the 6:35 p.m. contest.
