Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Chase Headley recorded his first four-hit game at the Triple-A level and the Portland Beavers scored six runs in the first inning, winning their fourth consecutive game for the first time in a year with a 9-5 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs before 5,863 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.
Jody Gerut drew three walks, scored three runs and hit a second-inning solo homer - his fifth of the year and his fourth of the homestand - for the Beavers, who have won seven of their last eight games to even their record at 14-14.
Craig Stansberry and Brian Myrow drove in two runs apiece for Portland, which wraps up its homestand against the Zephyrs Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
The Beavers, who gained another game on division-leading Salt Lake, last won four games in a row May 1-4, 2007.
Valentino Pascucci, the Pacific Coast League batting champion from a year ago, hit his first home run and was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, and three runs scored for the Zephyrs (16-14). Fernando Tatis and Chris Aguila hit back-to-back home runs off Portland starter Cesar Ramos in the fourth inning. Tatis added an RBI double in the eighth inning and tallied three RBIs total to lead New Orleans.
Ramos (3-2) struck out four and surrendered four runs on six hits - including the three home runs - in 5.2 innings of work for the win.
New Orleans starter Brian Stokes (3-3) didn't make it out of the first inning, giving up six runs, four hits and three walks while recording just one out. Stansberry narrowly missed his third home run of the season, capping the scoring with a two-run double off the top of the wall in left-center to make it 6-0. Chip Ambres had an RBI single in the inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
The Beavers got RBI singles from Headley and Myrow in the sixth to extend their lead to 9-4.
NOTES: The Beavers sent 10 men to the plate in the first inning ... the Beavers are 1-2 when wearing their Vintage Sunday uniforms ... Stokes' ERA rose from 5.60 to 7.48 as the result of his abbreviated start ... Gerut is 20-for-40 in his last 12 games to raise his average to a season-high .326 ... Portland is now 9.5 games behind Salt Lake in its division.
