Port Huron Alumni Set to Begin NCAA Season

October 11, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Port Huron Fighting Falcons News Release

Before the start of the 2012-13 NAHL season, the Port Huron Fighting Falcons emphasized their focus on developing players and moving them on to the next level.

Port Huron went on to lead the North Division in college commitments, and this weekend, a few former Fighting Falcons will begin their NCAA careers.

"It's really exciting to see our first outgoing class of NCAA players make their debut this weekend," said Fighting Falcons Head Coach and General Manager Michael Gershon. "These young men did everything they could to make it to this level and it's such a rewarding experience for our organization to see them make it this far.

"Moving our players on to this level is just as important to us as any goals we've set on the ice this season, and I'm confident that we can continue to help players in the developmental process so that we can get more and more players into college."

Last year's captain Ricky DeRosa is now a freshman on Penn State University's team as they enter the first season of play in the new Big Ten hockey conference. DeRosa left Port Huron as the team's all-time leader in games played, points scored and assists.

DeRosa will get his first taste of NCAA action Friday when he and the rest of the Nittany Lions take on the Army Black Knights.

DeRosa will take on a pair of familiar faces when the Black Knights come to town as former teammates Ryan Nick and Kyle Plageman suit up for Army.

Nick, a defenseman, played two seasons with the Fighting Falcons and was second to DeRosa with 25 assists last season. Plageman appeared in 34 games with Port Huron last season after beginning the year with Amarillo.

While these three former Fighting Falcons go head-to-head, another set of three alumni will suit up for the Lake Superior State Lakers as they host Robert Morris University.

Alex Globke, Peter Megariotis and Ian Miller have taken different paths, but have all ended up at the WCHA school in the Upper Peninsula.

Globke excelled in his 2011-12 season with the Fighting Falcons. He spent last season with the Carleton Place Canadians of the CCHL, and will make his NCAA debut at Lake Superior St.

Megariotis backstopped the Fighting Falcons for a record of 22-17-2 in two seasons in Port Huron. The goalie had initially committed to Ohio State before transferring up North to the Lakers.

Miller took the most direct path of his former teammates, going straight from the Fighting Falcons to the Lakers. The forward is Port Huron's all-time leader in goals scored in over 130 games played.

Globke, Megariotis and Miller supported their former teammates over the weekend when they watched the Fighting Falcons take three of four points in their series with the Soo Eagles, just a five-minute drive from their Lake Superior State campus.

The current crop of Fighting Falcons will travel to Flint to take on the Michigan Warriors Wednesday night before hosting the Wenatchee Wild at McMorran Arena Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for all Fighting Falcons home games are available now at the McMorran Arena Box Office.
