Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (11-22) scored four in the ninth to pull off a 5-4 comeback victory over the Bowie Baysox (23-9) Friday night at Mirabito Stadium. Wagner Lagrange hit the game-tying pinch-hit three-run homer and Jake Mangum hit a two out walk-off single to bring home Manny Rodriguez representing the winning run.
The Ponies came into the bottom of the ninth trailing 4-1 with Bowie RHP Tim Naughton entering the game. Hayden Senger hit the first pitch he saw into right field for a leadoff single followed by Jeremy Vasquez drawing a walk. After Will Toffey struck out, Lagrange pinch-hit for Yoel Romero and drilled an 0-1 pitch over the left-centerfield wall to tie the game at four. After Matt Winaker grounded out, Manny Rodriguez worked a seven pitch at bat resulting in a single to centerfield. Naughton was replaced by LHP Tyler Erwin, but the Ponies rally continued as Carlos Cortes hit the first pitch from Erwin for an opposite-field single setting up runners on 1st and 3rd with two out and the winning run just 90 feet away. That brought up Mangum who hit a ground ball sharply down the third base line for the game-winning hit
The Ponies first run came on a Toffey solo homer in the second inning, his third of the year and first at home to tie the game at 1. Bowie took the lead in the sixth on an RBI single from Cadyn Grenier and doubled their advantage with two in the eighth. Ponies starter Cole Gordon pitched well in just his second start of his professional career, as he allowed only two runs on four hits over five and two thirds in the no-decision. Binghamton LHP Andrew Mitchell picks up the win in relief (3-1) as he pitched one and a third scoreless frames.
The Ponies have now split the first four games of the six-game set with the Baysox. The series continues on Saturday night with first pitch at 6:35 PM and pregame coverage getting underway at 6:20 on MiLB.com.
POSTGAME NOTES: Lagrange has now hit safely in 7 of his last 8 games...Cortes is now on a 7-game hitting streak. He has had three straight multi-hit games and had at least two hits in six of his last seven games...Senger also was 2-4 with a run scored.
