Arkansas Travelers News Release
Hammons Field, Springfield, MO - RHP Stu Pomeranz (7-2) threw eight strong innings while Juan Richardson (13) and Rico Washington (13) homered to lead the Springfield Cardinals (36-26) to a 3-2 victory over the Arkansas Travelers (21-42). Arkansas starter RHP Chris Hunter (1-6) was strong in the loss allowing just three runs on six hits, one walk and four strikeouts. However Hunter served up the two homers for all of the Cardinals' runs in his sixth straight loss. In beating the Travs for the third time, Pomeranz was dominating allowing just two runs on four hits, three walks and two strikeouts. The Travs managed just one hit after the fourth and have scored nine runs during a five-game losing streak. Arkansas CF Dwaine Bacon reached base three times on two walks and a single. Bacon stole a base and scored a run. Travs SS Brandon Wood reached three times as well with a double and two walks plus a run scored. Springfield's win coupled with Tulsa's loss at Wichita brings the Cards within one game of the Drillers for first place in the North with six games left in the first half.
Hunter issued a leadoff walk in the first inning, but then struck out the side and retired nine straight batters.
The Travs had the first chance to score in the third inning. Matt Pali lined a pitch off the right-field wall, but only got a single out of it. After stealing second base, Pali moved to third base on a passed ball and Bacon walked with one out. Aaron Peel hit a high bouncer that Washington played above his head at third base to start a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Still, the Travs got ahead in the fourth inning against Pomeranz. Wood doubled with one out and moved to third on a groundout. Bobby Wilson pulled a line drive hit into the left-field gap to score Wood, but Cards LF Nick Stavinoha gunned Wilson at second as he tried to stretch the hit into a double.
Richardson ended Hunter's string of ten straight hitters with a one-out single in the fourth. Washington got ahead in the count 2-0 and sent a high fly ball over the right-field fence for a 2-1 Springfield lead.
After Pomeranz threw a perfect fifth inning, he walked Bacon to begin the sixth. Bacon stole second base and moved to third on a groundout before scoring the tying run when Eric Rodland hit a sacrifice fly to deep center.
Richardson put Springfield up 3-2 for good when he led off the bottom of the sixth with an opposite-field homer to right. Washington followed with a screaming line drive into right-center, but RF Jason Aspito made a sparkling diving catch on the warning track.
The Travs got the tying run on base when Bacon singled with one out in the eighth inning. But with two outs, Bacon tried to steal second base and was thrown out by Gabe Johnson.
Cards' RHP Mark Worrell worked the ninth inning pitching around a walk to Wood for the save (16).
Time of game was 2:15 and the paid attendance was 6,197.
