North Bay Battalion News Release
NORTH BAY, Ont. - Zach Poirier and Cam Dineen of the North Bay Battalion are among 56 Ontario Hockey League skaters named to the November 'Players to Watch' list released Tuesday by the National Hockey League's central scouting department.
Second-year centre Poirier and rookie defenceman Dineen, both 17, are rated as C prospects, projected as fourth- to sixth-round candidates, for the 2016 NHL Draft to be conducted June 24-25 at Buffalo.
"I'm happy for them that they made the NHL central scouting list, but obviously with C ratings that means that there's still room for improvement and extra work to be done," said Battalion coach Stan Butler.
Poirier, five-foot-11 and 191 pounds, has three goals and two assists for five points in 21 games this season. The Toronto native, a resident of Mountain, Ont., was North Bay's first-round choice, 14th overall, in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection from the Upper Canada Cyclones minor midgets.
He had eight goals and three assists for 11 points in 60 games as a rookie last season.
"I didn't really expect to be there with the start I've had, but hopefully I'll spark something soon," said Poirier.
"I've got to start putting pucks in the net, so that's one (thing), and just getting a few more pluses rather than minuses."
Dineen, five-foot-11 and 182 pounds, has two goals and 11 assists for 13 points in 21 games. The Toms River, N.J., resident was an 11th-round choice in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection from the New Jersey Rockets under-19 program.
"It's an honour to be listed, but it doesn't mean anything, so I just have to keep working hard and, once the draft comes, hopefully I'll hear my name," said Dineen.
"I have to keep working on my defensive game and working out in the gym, getting bigger and stronger."
Six goaltenders also were named, making a total of 62 OHLers on the NHL list.
Eleven skaters were given grades of A, denoting them as potential first-rounders. They included defenceman Jakob Chychrun of the Sarnia Sting and wingers Alex DeBrincat of the Erie Otters, Max Jones of the London Knights and Alexander Nylander of the Mississauga Steelheads.
Players are first-time eligible for the seven-round NHL Draft in the year in which they turn 18, unless they were born Sept. 16 or later, in which case they must wait until the following year.
