Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters committed a season-high five errors in a 6-2 loss to the Long Island Ducks on 90's Night at Constellation Field with 3,850 rad fans in attendance. The loss drops the Skeeters' record to 11-15 in the second half and 47-49 overall.
Long Island broke up the pitcher's duel in the top of the fifth after a slew of miscues by the Skeeters. Blake Davis singled into center and was sacrificed over the second by Carlos Hughes. Fehlandt Lentini singled through the right-side of the infield, moving Davis to third. The Ducks broke the scoreless seal on a failed pickoff attempt at first as the ball skirted away from first baseman Delwyn Young. Delta Cleary, Jr., doubled home a run with a fly ball down the left field line and came in to score on a throwing error on a double-steal attempt, giving Long Island a 3-0 cushion.
The Skeeters utilized Long Island starter Darin Downs' wildness in the bottom of the fifth to scratch across a pair of runs. Daryle Ward picked up the team's first hit with a single into shallow right-centerfield, but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Kevin Russo. Renny Osuna singled through the right-side of the infield, moving Russo to second. Patrick Palmeiro worked a walk to load the bases. With Denny Almonte at the plate, Downs fired a breaking ball in the dirt that ricocheted away from Mike Blanke at catcher, allowing Russo to come home and give the Skeeters their first run. Later in Almonte's at-bat, Downs again tossed a high fastball that bounced off the glove of Blanke, bringing in Osuna and cutting the score to 3-2.
The Ducks reclaimed a three-run lead on a pair of walks in the top of the sixth. Blanke drew a free pass from Wright to open the inning and Hughes worked a walk off James Parr in relief to put runners on first and second. Lentini laced a two-out triple down the line in right and into the corner allowing both runs to come in and give Long Island a 5-2 advantage.
Long Island added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Lyons reached on an error to open the inning and advanced to third on a single down the left field line by Cody Puckett. Bryan Sabatella lifted a sacrifice fly to right to move the score to 6-2.
Adrian Martin and Tim Gustafson combined to keep the Ducks off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth, but the bats never got going as the Skeeters fell, 6-2.
