Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
Hamilton, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs lost the final game of a three game series versus the Cleveland Barons on Saturday evening at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton. Scoring the overtime winner for the Barons was Christian Ehrhoff and the Bulldogs earned five of a possible six points in the series.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring early in the opening frame on a great individual effort by Tomas Plekanec. Plekanec fought off a defender at centre-ice, broke down the left side and fed a perfect pass over to rookie Andrei Kostitsyn who banged in his third of the season. The goal came at the 6:21 mark.
Later in the period, Jason Ward got called for crosschecking and the Barons capitalized on the power play. Defenceman Christian Ehrhoff showed great patience controlling the puck at the blue-line before firing a point-shot that was redirected into the net off of Bulldogs' forward Jonathan Ferland.
The Bulldogs went ahead on a strange goal before the period ended. Tomas Plekanec, from behind the net, banked a shot off of the skates of Barons defenceman Jim Fahey and past goaltender Dimitri Patzold. The goal came at the 17:14 mark and was only the second shot registered by the Bulldogs in the first period.
Cleveland would tie the game six minutes into the second period on another power play. Garrett Stafford fired a cannon of a slap shot into the top corner, over the shoulder of goalie Dan Ellis, for his first goal of the season.
Midway through the third period the Barons would go ahead 3-2 on a goal by Riley Armstrong. The unassisted marker was the first of his pro career.
With less than three minutes remaining in regulation the Bulldogs tied the game on a point shot by defenceman Dan Focht. Tomas Plekanec won the draw back to Focht who let a shot go that was too much for goalie Dimitri Patzold to handle. The goal was the first of the season for Focht and came at 17:47 of the third.
Early in the overtime period, Bulldogs forward Andrei Kostitsyn got called for high-sticking and it would prove to be costly. The Barons took advantage on the power play as defenceman Christian Ehrhoff potted his second goal of the game on a shot from the point. The overtime game-winner came at 2:07 of the extra frame.
The Bulldogs' next action will take place on Wednesday, November 10th when they will travel to Rochester to take on the Amerks. Game time will be 7:05pm and fans can listen to all the action live at www.hamiltonbulldogs.com or AM 820-CHAM.
