Playoff opener spoiled by rain

Little Falls, NJ – Mother Nature had different plans for the New Jersey Jackals and the Bangor Lumberjacks. Wednesday's first game of the 2004 playoffs was postponed due to rain at Yogi Berra Stadium

Consistent rain hit the North Jersey area for the entire day, rendering the field unplayable. The game will be rescheduled for Thursday, September 9th at 7:05 pm. Thursday's regularly scheduled game will be moved to Friday evening, also with a 7:05 p.m. start.

If Thursday night's game is also postponed, a double header will be played beginning at 5:05 pm on Friday, September 10th. Both games will be nine innings.

The Northeast League announced its 2004 Postseason All-Star Team, on Labor Day, Monday September 6, 2004. Three members of the Jackals were selected by the managers, media, and other league officials. The League also announced its manager of the year, and Jackals' skipper Joe Calfapietra received the prestigious honor.

Shortstop Chris Rowan was selected to the team. In his second season in the Northeast League, it was his first All-Star Selection. In 2004, Rowan batted .268, with 23 homeruns, and 63 RBI. His 23 homeruns were tied for the league lead with Bangor's Derry Hammond.

Mid-season All-Star Wilton Veras was also selected to the postseason squad. Veras won the batting title of the Northeast League with a .369 average, along with five homeruns and 59 RBI. He also tallied 29 doubles.

Wady Almonte, who was also selected to play in the midsummer classic, was named a member of the season ending team. Almonte batted .327 in 86 games, with nine homeruns, 64 RBI, and 29 doubles.

Manager Joe Calfapietra received this second Manager of the Year Award. Calfapietra was the recipient of the award in 2002, while managing the Gary Railcats of the Northern League. The Railcats were an expansion traveling team that Calfapietra guided to a 35-55 record.

Come to March of Dimes Night at Yogi Berra Stadium, on Thursday, September 9, 2004. 50 percent of your ticket price will be donated to the March of Dimes. It is also game two of the first round, of the 2004 Northeast League Playoffs. The Jackals' opponent has yet to be determined. In addition, all fans who bring their old cell phones, the March of Dimes will recoup $3.00 per phone.

The New Jersey Jackals and the United Way of North Essex are joining together to boost New Jersey non-for-profits. Forty community agencies will be selling Jackals tickets for the upcoming 2004 playoff games, beginning on Wednesday, September 8, 2004, Thursday September 9, 2004, and Sunday, September 12, 2004, if necessary. All of these games will be played at Yogi Berra Stadium. These community agencies will earn a commission for all of their ticket sales. Support your United Away agency, and help them raise money for their worthy causes.
