Durham, N.C. -- Brockton first baseman Kris Zacuto and Quebec right-hander Paul Jacinto were selected by the managers and members of the media as the Northeast League's Rookie Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, on Wednesday. This marks the second straight season a member of the Rox has been named Rookie of the Year with Craig Lewis taking home the award last season.

Zacuto, who also caught 28 games, finished the year hitting .277 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI. In addition, he stroked 12 doubles and scored 45 runs for Brockton. Zacuto posted a slugging percentage of .450 and an on-base percentage of .356 in 77 games. This is his first year in the NEL after playing with Richmond of the Frontier League in 2003.

Jacinto, who was pitching for BYU a few months ago, has taken the league by storm since his signing on July 16. In eight starts, he has gone 7-0 with a 0.90 earned run average. Jacinto has tossed two complete games, including a shutout, allowed 11 runs, six earned, and struck out 37, while walking eight for Quebec, which opens the 2004 NEL Playoffs tonight versus North Shore. Opponents are hitting .201 against him. Jacinto was named the Rawlings Player of the Month for August and was been chosen as the Pitcher of the Week on August 2.
