BACKS TO THE WALL
The Oilers and Americans split a pair of games at the BOK Center last weekend and with the Americans leading the first round series 3-1, the Oilers must win tonight in Game 5 to extend their season. Allen holds a 15-12 edge in goals scored in the series but Tulsa has shown dramatic defensive improvement over the last two contests by allowing only four goals total in Games 3 and 4. The Oilers are 3-6-2 in 11 visits to the Allen Event Center this season and have lost each of their last four trips to the Lone Star State. An Oilers' win tonight would send the series back to Tulsa for Game 6 on Thursday night.
GAME 4 RECAP
Despite out-shooting the Americans for the first time in the series, the Oilers suffered a 3-1 loss in Game 4 at the BOK Center. Allen forward Gary Steffes opening the scoring in the first period with a shot that bounced off the crossbar and down near the Tulsa goal line. The officials ruled that the puck crossed completely over the line and the goal was upheld for a 1-0 Americans' lead. A shorthanded goal from Allen captain Jamie Schaafsma in the second period proved to be the difference as the Oilers were unable to overcome the two-goal deficit. Americans' goalie Joel Rumpel made 31 saves and the Oilers managed just a single goal on eight power play opportunities.
UPS AND DOWNS
The Oilers went from their highest offensive output of the series in Game 3 (5 goals), to their lowest offensive output of the series in Game 4 (1 goal). Tulsa recorded 30 penalty minutes in Game 3, its highest total of the series, to only 6 penalty minutes in Game 4, the lowest total of the series. Game 4 also marked the first time in the series that the Oilers trailed after the opening period. Tulsa holds a 5-2 advantage in first period scoring while Allen holds a 4-1 edge in third period scoring.
FIRST TIME, LONG TIME
Tulsa winger T.J. Caig is experiencing North American playoff hockey for the first time in his ten-year pro career. The 34-year old made postseason appearances with teams in Holland, Germany, France, and Italy, but missed out on the playoffs in his previous tour of duty with the Oilers during the 2009-10 campaign. This season, Caig is tied for the team lead with four playoff points and has posted points in three of the four games against Allen.
STILL GOING
The Oilers are playing in the 77th game of the season tonight and have set a new franchise record for games in a single season (regular season and playoffs combined). The previous high was 76 games set in 2010-11 when Tulsa played a 66-game regular season in the Central Hockey League and appeared in 10 postseason games.
LOCKED IN ON PENALTY KILL
The Oilers were 7-for-7 on the penalty kill over the course of two playoff home games last weekend. Tulsa is one of three teams in the ECHL (South Carolina and Florida) with perfect postseason penalty kill records on home ice.
SHOOTING GAP
Through four games in the series, the Americans have fired 49 more shots on net (155-106) than the Oilers. Allen leads all ECHL playoff teams with 38.7 shots per game while Tulsa ranks 13th out of 16 teams with 26.5 shots per game.
OIL DROPS
Stephen Perfetto ranks second among all rookies with three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in the playoffs...Allen center and former Oiler Gary Steffes has scored a goal in all four games of the series...The Oilers are 13-10 all-time when facing elimination in the playoffs...Drew Fisher has three of his four points on the power play...Jon Booras has two goals on five shots in the series.
