Manchester Monarchs News Release

Not many 15-year-olds have the honor of being considered one of the top hockey prospects in the country, but that's exactly what happened to North Carolina native Patrick O'Sullivan. He was named to Team USA and was touted by his coaches as having a distinct talent and passion for the game. He was subsequently drafted first overall by the Mississauga IceDogs in the 2001 OHL Priority Draft and played well enough to earn OHL and CHL Rookie of the Year awards. He led the IceDogs in scoring all three years he was with them and at 18 was picked up in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota Wild.

His two-goal winning performance in the World Junior Championship finals in Helsinki, Finland that year helped the USA win their first gold in junior hockey, and his accumulation of 23 points in 24 games for the IceDogs showed the world just what a great choice the Wild made in their second-round pick. Tallying no less than 80 points in each of his seasons in the OHL and 93 points during the 2005-06 season for the AHL's Houston Aeros made him an ideal choice for a trade to the Los Angeles Kings.

The six-foot center brings some extraordinary talent to the Kings organization. Not only is he able to play in all three forward positions, in Houston last year, he broke the franchise records for most regular season goals by a rookie, most regular season assists by a rookie, and most regular season points by a rookie. He also walked away with the Dudley "Red" Garret Memorial trophy (Rookie of the Year in the AHL) and a position on the 2005-06 AHL All-Rookie team. He scored five goals and five assists in eight games of the AHL playoffs.

O'Sullivan will be in L.A. with the Kings when training camp opens on September 14, battling for a position on the team. If he makes it, he will be the first player from North Carolina to play for the NHL.
