Hickory Crawdads News Release

Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads found themselves in another pitchers' duel Thursday night, with a bang-bang play at the plate scoring the night's only run in the Crawdads 1-0 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds in front of 3,343 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The 'Dads and 'Birds entered the 7th inning in a scoreless tie, with Hickory hurlers Frank Lopez and Jose Monegro putting up dueling zeros with Delmarva starter Janser Severino. The top of the frame started with an error however, as Monegro misplayed a ground ball to the mound to allow Conor Bierfeldt to reach safely. One out later, a hit-and-run double to left field by Austin Wynns sent Bierfeldt around the bases and sliding in to home just ahead of the relay throw to Crawdads catcher Joe Jackson.

The lone run would be all the Shorebirds would need, as the 'Dads fell 1-0 for their 7th shutout of the season. The Crawdads have now dropped five straight after winning five in a row during their last home stand. The loss is also the first of the season for the 'Dads against the 'Birds, with Hickory now 7-1 on the year against Delmarva.

The Crawdads pitching staff of Lopez, Monegro, and Ryne Slack combined to hold the Shorebirds to one unearned run on six hits, two walks, and 10 combined strikeouts. Lopez took a no-decision after tossing five shutout frames on three hits, two walks, and seven Ks. Monegro (0-1) was the hard luck loser after allowing the unearned run on two hits, no walks, and two strikeouts during his two innings of relief. Delmarva reliever Williams Louico (2-1) earned the win with two scoreless frames out of the pen, while teammate Donnie Hart (4) picked up the save with a perfect 9th inning.

Evan Van Hoosier (1-4), Ronald Guzman (1-4, 2B), and Luis Marte (1-3) recorded Hickory's three hits on the night, while both Ryan Cordell (0-2, 2BB) and Joe Jackson (0-3, BB) had hit streaks of seven and eight games respectively snapped.

The Crawdads (29-25) will look to bounce back in game two of their four game series against the Shorebirds (23-31) on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm.
