Hickory, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds won a pitchers' duel over the Hickory Crawdads on Thursday night, 1-0. Delmarva (61-62) stole away a rare low-scoring game in the series opener at L.P. Frans Stadium, a hitter friendly ballpark.

Janser Severino and Frank Lopez matched each other pitch for pitch in scoreless starts. Severino stranded the bases loaded in the sixth inning, one of the few scoring opportunities for Hickory. The Shorebirds right-hander allowed just three hits in six scoreless frames. Lopez was just as sharp for the Crawdads, surrendering just three hits in five innings while striking out seven batters.

Delmarva broke through in the seventh inning on a close play at the plate. Conor Bierfeldt reached on an error as pitcher Jose Monegro bobbled a swinging bunt. On a hit-and-run, Austin Wynns hooked a double down the left field line. The relay came from the corner, and Bierfeldt snuck his foot just under the tag of catcher Joe Jackson.

The 1-0 lead was all Delmarva needed on a night dominated by pitching. Williams Louico threw two scoreless innings of relief without allowing a base hit. Donnie Hart locked up his fourth save with a perfect ninth inning. Severino improved to 3-2 with his second straight win, avenging his previous outing at Hickory when he was roughed up for a career-high eight runs. It was the tenth shutout victory of the season for the Shorebirds' pitching staff.

The Shorebirds and Crawdads continue their series on Friday evening. Left-hander Steven Brault (8-8, 3.19) will start for Delmarva against Hickory right-hander Anyelo Leclerc (2-3, 2.75). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm at L.P. Frans Stadium.
