DAYTONA, Fla. - Michael Plassmeyer spun seven outstanding innings and the Stone Crabs broke a tie in the ninth inning Monday, taking the first game from the Daytona Tortugas 3-2 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Plassmeyer did not allow an earned run over seven innings, striking out six while only allowing four hits. The left-hander has turned in five quality starts in his last seven outings.
With the Stone Crabs (73-46, 38-15) leading 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the Tortugas (57-61, 22-31) strung together three straight two-out singles to tie the game 2-2.
In a tie game in the top of the ninth, Izzy Wilson drew a one-out walk. Zach Rutherford then shot a single to right to move Wilson to third. The next batter was Jake Palomaki, who bunted the ball back to the pitcher. After Wilson got caught in a rundown, Daytona catcher Mark Kolozsvary threw the ball down the left field line to allow Wilson to score and give Charlotte a 3-2 lead.
Chandler Raiden (6-3) worked 1.1 innings to get the win, before lefty Trey Cumbie recorded the final two outs to earn his second save.
The Stone Crabs got the scoring going in the top of the first against Daytona starter Mac Sceroler. After Palomaki singled to start the game, he stole second and third. With one one, Ronaldo Hernandez lifted a sacrifice fly to left to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead.
Still leading by one in the top of the second, Moises Gomez cranked a solo home run to deep left field, extending the lead to 2-0. Gomez' home run was his 14th of the year, tying the Stone Crabs' single-season record.
Charlotte will now go for their eighth straight win at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday. Cristopher Sanchez (0-0, 2.29) is scheduled to pitch for the Stone Crabs, against Austin Orewiler (7-8, 3.86) of Daytona. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
