Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass. - August 30, 2011) - The Brockton Rox (21-21, 47-41) made their quest for the playoffs a bit more difficult Tuesday night with a series opening 7-3 loss to the Pittsfield Colonials (24-17, 49-38) at Campanelli Stadium.
The Colonials jumped on John Kelly (1-1) in the early going, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning on Peter Fatse's two-run double and Scott Knazek's two-run single that followed in the next at bat.
Kelly allowed more than one earned run for the first time this season in the loss. The Veteran gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in five innings, while tying his season high with seven strike outs.
The Rox cut the 4-0 lead in half on a Shawn Williams two-run homer in the second, but were unable to muster much else against Pat Moran (11-3).
Moran moves to third in the league with his eleventh win, lasting seven frames, while scattering eight hits and allowing just two runs.
Jerod Edmondson provided the final tally for Pittsfield on a two-run dinger against Mark Rosen in the sixth inning that expanded the lead to 7-2.
The Rox bullpen quieted the Pittsfield offense over the final three frames, but Brockton managed just one final run on a Keith Brachold RBI double in the ninth.
Mike Zenko entered to record the final out of the game with the tying run on deck, earning his sixth save of the season.
The Rox have lost ten of their last eleven, including seven straight to set a new franchise record. Brockton now sits in fifth place in the Can-Am League overall standings, one half game behind the Worcester Torandoes for the final playoff spot.
The final homestand of the regular season continues on Wednesday night with the middle of three games. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with Zach Woods (1-1, 1.57) on the hill for the Rox. He is opposed by Pittsfieldstarter and pitching coach Chad Paronto (9-6, 3.92).
