Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Tornadoes allowed three homeruns and 15 hits to the Pittsfield Colonials, dropping the opener of the three-game series 11-5.

Shawn GIlblair gave up nine hits, four of them for extra bases in the Tornadoes defeat. The southpaw starter threw four innings and allowed seven runs (all earned).

The Colonials scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead, with their first run coming on the first pitch of the frame. Chris Torres hit his fourth homer of the season (and second against Worcester) to break up a string of six straight batters retired by Gilblair to start the game.

The Pittsfield club recorded seven extra base hits on the night: three homers, three doubles and one triple. Only Danny Bomback's leadoff double in the eighth wasn't involved in a run-scoring play.

in the ninth inning, Worcester scored three runs. The Tornadoes batted around, loading the bases for the third inning (and scoring in that situation for the first time). Brendon Kelliher-- in his return from the disabled list-- pinch-hit for Jacob Fabry and hit a two-run double, plating Abraham Nunez and Alex Trezza. Nick Salotti came around to score on on error by reliever Brandon Garner on which Tony Patane reached base.

Patrick Moran went eight innings for the win, his second in as many starts this season against the Tornadoes. He struck one batter out, walked one and gave up 11 hits and two runs (one earned).

Mike Mullen made his Tornadoes debut by allowing a couple of runs on three hits in one inning. Mike Gedman had the same fate in two innings. Kevin Cooper pitched a scoreless eighth before the Worcester rally.

The win gives Pittsfield six against the Tornadoes this year, meaning they can finish no worse than 6-6 against Worcester this season. The Colonials pull within two games of the Tornadoes for first place in the second half and added to their previously 1.5-game lead over Worcester for the fourth overall spot in the CanAm League Standings.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at 7:00, with Worcester's pitcher not yet announced. Pre-game coverage starts on USTREAM with Nick Gagalis at 6:50.
