New Jersey Jackals News Release
Newark, N.J. - Trailing 6-2, the New Jersey Jackals plated nine of the game's final 10 runs to rally past their in-state rivals, the Newark Bears, 11-7 in Tuesday night's series openear at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
In the victory, New Jersey catcher Myron Leslie doubled twice and drove in three runs while center fielder Sean Smith swiped four bases and scored twice as the Jackals won for the ninth time in their last 12 contests to pull within a half game of the Worcester Tornadoes' atop the second half standings with 12 games remaining in the regular season.
The Jackals opened the scoring in the top of the third when Mike DeJesus lined a two-run single to make it 2-0. However, the Bears plated the game's next six runs - three of them unearned - against New Jersey starter Michael Moore to open up a 6-2 lead.
The Jackals began chipping away in the top of the fifth inning, stringing together four consecutive two-out hits while plating three runs on a two-run double by Leslie and an RBI single off the bat of Kris Sanchez to cut their deficit to 6-5.
Newark threatened in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases against Moore before reliever Jared Locke entered and retired the lone batter he faced to strand the bases loaded. The Jackals regained the lead for good with four runs in the top of the sixth to extend their advantage to 9-6.
Newark pulled within two at 9-7 in the bottom of the sixth on a Tim Raines Jr. RBI single, but the Jackals caped the scoring with a pair of eighth-inning runs courtesy of three walks and an error.
Locke (4-1) notched the win in relief while Newark starter Pedro Rivera (0-1) took the loss after surrendering nine runs on 10 hits over six frames. Four New Jersey relievers combined to allow just one run on two hits over 4 1/3 innings.
The Jackals and Bears play the middle contest of their three-game series on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. when New Jersey sends southpaw Jon Kibler (1-5, 6.43 ERA) to the mound against Newark right-hander Brian Parker (0-0, 1.29 ERA) at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
