Pittsburgh Penguins To Hold Camp For Prospects
Published on August 23, 2007 under American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
The Pittsburgh Penguins will hold a prospects camp from September 5-11 in Kitchener, Ontario. The young Penguins will have several days of practices before competing in a series of games against teams of prospects from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, and Florida Panthers.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins coaches Todd Richards and Dan Bylsma will be on the ice with the players, but the entire Pittsburgh Penguins hockey staff - led by GM Ray Shero, assistant GM Chuck Fletcher, head coach Michel Therrien and assistant coaches Andre Savard and Mike Yeo - will attend the camp.
Among the Penguins prospects taking part in the camp will be 20-year-old defenseman Kris Letang, who scored two goals in seven NHL games for the Penguins during the 2006-07 season and was then named the top defenseman in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Others include 22-year-old winger Jonathan Filewich, who scored a team-high 30 goals last season for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins; 22-year-old goaltender David Brown, who led all NCAA goalies with 30 wins and a 1.58 goals-against-average during his senior year at Notre Dame in 2006-07; and 18-year-old center Keven Veilleux, the Penguins' second-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
It is uncertain whether first-round draft pick Angelo Esposito will be able to attend the prospects camp because he suffered a groin injury earlier this week. The 18-year-old center will be re-evaluated after 7-10 days by team doctors for his junior club, the Quebec Remparts.
Defenseman Alex Goligoski will miss both the prospects camp and training camp, as expected, because he is still recovering from off-season shoulder surgery. The 22-year-old product of the University of Minnesota will not be cleared to resume contact until October 1st. He will be skating under the supervision of Penguins trainer Chris Stewart and strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar, starting in early September.
Pittsburgh Penguins veterans will report to training camp in Pittsburgh on September 13th. More details on training camp will be provided in the near future.
