Independence, Missouri - Saturday night saw the conclusion of the home-and-home series between the Allen Americans and the Missouri Mavericks at the Independence Event Center. The Mavericks took the decision Fridaynight, defeating Allen 5-2, dropping the Americans to 5 th place in the Central Hockey League standings with 26 points. The Americans were looking to end their three game skid and get back in the win column to work their way back up in the standings.
Allen got on the board first and early, when Greger Hanson notched his 5thgoal of the season at 2:53, assisted by Phil Fox and Tyler Ludwig. Missouri led the Americans in shots on net at the end of the opening period by a 12-8 count but the Americans led on the scoreboard, 1-0.
The Americans extended their lead to 2-0 on Jonathan Lessard's 11th goal of the season, assisted by Alex Lavoie and Kale Kerbashian at 13:23 of the middle frame. Allen followed that up less than two minutes later with another marker, this time from Alex Lavoie scoring his 13th goal of the year, assisted by Jonathan Lessard and Darryl Bootland. Missouri again outshot Allen in the period by a 17-14 count and led after two periods, 29-22 but trailed the Americans 3-0 on the scoreboard.
Missouri pulled out all the stops in the third period to try to rally back from the 3-0 deficit outshooting Allen in the frame 11-3 for a total of 40-25 over three periods. Determined play by the Americans, led by the stellar performance of Bryan Pitton in net, stymied the Mavericks and gave the Americans the 3-0 victory.
The Americans return home for a pair of weekend games against the expansion Brampton Beast at the Allen Event Center beginning Friday night, with the puck drop scheduled for 7:05PM.
