Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The road continues to be very, very good to the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
Three runs in the third inning and six strong innings from starting pitching Matt Jackson paced the Goldeyes (11-7) to a 3-2 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries (6-11) in front of 2,011 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium Monday night.
The win improves Winnipeg's record to 8-3 on the road this season after going 3-4 during their first homestand last week.
The Canaries loaded the bases on Jackson before an out was recorded in the bottom of the first inning. However, Jackson was able to limit the damage to a sac fly.
"Jackson pitched his butt off," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said on the Jewel 101 post-game show, "especially in that first inning when he gave up three lead-off singles. He minimized the damage there and only allowed one run across the board. That won us the game right there."
Winnipeg tallied all three of their runs in the top of the third inning. Ray Sadler singled in Ryan Pineda, Luis Alen doubled in Tyler Kuhn and Sadler scored on a sac fly from Donnie Webb.
From there, Jackson was solid for his third quality start of the season in four starts. He retired the last six batters he faced.
"Getting through the sixth inning is big for your starter to get that quality start," Vermilyea said. "It helped keep that bullpen fresh."
Still, the bullpen was active in the game's final three innings, as five relievers saw work.
"We used a lot of guys out of the bullpen, but we kept their pitch counts down so they can come back out tomorrow," Vermilyea said.
Only Gabe Aguilar was tagged for a run, as he gave up a solo home run to Sioux Falls' Drew Muran in the bottom of the seventh.
Kissock came in for the final two outs of the bottom of the ninth and struck out former Major Leaguer Brandon Jones to end the game.
Jackson picked up his third win of the season, while Kissock earned his fifth save. Sioux Falls starter Kyle Ruwe suffered the loss, despite having a quality start.
Alen, Sadler and Jake Blackwood each had two hits for the Goldeyes.
The two sides will meet again Tuesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. Lefty Nick Hernandez (0-0, 7.90) will take the ball for Winnipeg against Sioux Falls' Kyle Vasquez (2-1, 3.17). Game time is 7 p.m.
The pre-game show on Jewel 101 (100.7 FM) with Steve Schuster begins at 6:30 p.m.
