Pitching Solid as Hawks Win Opener 6-2

RICHMOND, Ind. – The pitching was good from start to finish this time for Rockford as the 'Hawks took the series opener, 6-2, over the Roosters.

RiverHawks' starter John Richards went 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits, the only offense of the game for Richmond. He was knocked out of the contest after back-to-back home runs by Josh Hollingsworth and Tony Sanguinetti.

Luke Lambo and Jason Glosser combined to close the door on the Roosters, allowing just three baserunners, all on walks, in 3 1/3 hitless innings.

Rockford hit a pair of homers as well, the first of which was a three-run blast by catcher Gooby Gerlits in the third inning. Along with his fifth homer of the year, Gerlits tripled and scored in the ninth to break out of a 3-24 slump.

Brian Baron hit his first home run of the season to lead off the sixth inning, giving the Hawks a 5-0 lead at the time. Rockford never trailed in the game.

Doug Schutt knocked home the RiverHawks' sixth run with a double in the ninth inning. The hit also extended Schutt's hitting streak to 12 games, a new career high.

The RiverHawks play game two of their series in Richmond, beginning at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday. They're back home for nine games, beginning with Axberg Heating and Air/Continental Coupons Koozie Night at 7:05 p.m. Friday. The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 – the Hub.
