Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD - The Mainers were looking to rebound after a tough opening day loss and tonight they did just that. Against the two-time defending champion Valley Blue Sox, the Mainers defended home turf and picked up a 2-0 win.
The Moose struck out 11 times their last time out, but an inspired pitching staff flipped the script at Goodall Park. The three hurlers who took the mound combined to give up just three hits while striking out eight en route to a shutout.
The entirety of the game's scoring came in Sanford's first three swings. Shane Marshall (Webster, N.Y./Binghamton) led off the bottom of the first inning with a four-pitch walk and was promptly driven in on a Drew DeMartino (Pittsfield, Mass./Hartford) double. Elliot Curtis (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada/Kentucky) followed up one batter later with an RBI single of his own. That was all the Mainers pitchers would need.
Darren Williams (Maysville, Ky./Eastern Kentucky) started things off on the bump and delivered the shutdown performance the team needed. Making his first start since these two teams met in game two of the Northern Division Championship Series last August, he lasted 6.2 innings of work, allowing the only three Blue Sox hits while walking one and fanning four. He also showed off his athleticism defensively in the fifth inning by catching a pop-up on a Matt Richardson bunt and fielding a comebacker to start a double play. No Blue Sox player could go further than second base.
Williams would turn things over to the bullpen who picked up right where he left off. After exiting the game to a standing ovation from the Mainers faithful, Pat Petteruti (East Greenwich, R.I./Brown) faced the minimum his 1.1 innings of work. He finished off the top of the eighth by freezing Valley catcher Dakota Mulcay with a devastating 12-6 curveball for his lone strikeout.
Heading into the ninth inning, Moose skipper Cejay Suarez (Abington, Mass./Bridgton Academy) turned things over to Jacob Parker (Monroe, Ga./Georgia Southern) to slam the door. He would do just that, overpowering the three batters he faced with his mid-90's fastball and striking out the side, securing the Mainers' first win of the 2019 NECBL season.
The Mainers continue their three-game homestand tomorrow evening at 6:30 P.M. as the undefeated Mystic Schooners roll into town. You can catch all the action on the Patriot Subaru Mainers Network powered by the NECBL Broadcast Network with Ryan Zimmerman on the play-by-play call.
