Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE - The Asheville Tourists won for the eighth time in their last 12 games with an impressive 3-1 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets on Friday night. Asheville rode their pitching the entire night. Augusta managed only six hits; only one of which went for extra-bases.

Colten Schmidt tossed six innings and lowered his ERA from 2.21 to 2.16. Colten struck out seven GreenJackets hitters and scattered five hits. The left-hander did not walk a batter on the way to his fourth win of the year. Schmidt has pitched at least five innings in all 14 of his starts this season.

Raymells Rosa was next in line and the right-hander was excellent out of the bullpen. Rosa's slider was untouchable and he fired a pair of scoreless innings behind Schmidt. PJ Poulin closed the door with a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.

Asheville plated two of their three runs in the bottom of the first. Coco Montes ripped a two-out RBI single into left field to open the scoring. Two batters later, Willie MacIver worked a bases loaded walk to make the score 2-0.

Both teams exchanged runs in the fifth. Augusta managed a pair of hits to lead off the inning but Schmidt settled in and finished out the frame with just the one run allowed. Asheville put Grant Lavigne at third base thanks to a Niko Decolati double in the bottom half of the inning. MacIver then picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Terrin Vavra was presented his South Atlantic League Uncle Rays June Player of the Month award pre-game and received a standing ovation. Vavra finished the night with a single and a run scored. LeeMarcus Boyd also continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

Game two of the series between Asheville and Augusta is scheduled for Saturday night at 6:05pm.
