Madison Mallards News Release

EAU CLAIRE, WI - August 9, 2011. In perhaps one of the best all-around pitching performances in the 2011 Northwoods League season, the Madison Mallards fell to the Eau Claire Express 4-1 Tuesday evening at Carson Park. The Mallards possessed a one-run lead in the back-and-forth affair until the bottom of the eighth when the Express rallied for four runs to secure the two-game sweep.

The game was scoreless until the top of inning number four when the Mallards struck first with a run scored by Zack Powers (Florida) that resulted from an error.

It appeared as if the pitcher's duel between Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech) and AJ Glasshof (Wharton Community College) would keep the score at 1-0, as both pitchers had some of their best stuff Tuesday night.

Shellhorn ended up pitching seven-plus innings and was charged with one run on only three hits. He had four walks and seven strikeouts en route to lowering his earned run average to 2.30. Despite his best efforts, Shellhorn received a no-decision.

Glasshof went six full innings and was charged with an unearned run. He allowed only four hits and surrendered just one walk against seven strikeouts. Glasshof was removed before the Express scored their four runs and received a no-decision.

The offensive damage was done in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Madison bullpen. Alex Allbritton (New Mexico) scored the tying run when Ty Forney (New Mexico State) drew a bases loaded walk. Ryan Shober (UIC) scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Josh Scheffert (Nebraska), and Justin Viele (Santa Clara) drove in Eau Claire's final two runs.

Taking the loss for the Mallards was Travis Parker (St. Louis). Parker (2-1) allowed two earned runs before retiring a batter and was removed in favor of Tony Bryant (Oregon State).

For the second night in a row, Evan Zerff (Long Island) picked up the win for the Express. Zerff pitched two innings and held the Mallards to only one walk as he moved to 4-2 on the season. Mahlon Zimmerman (Mankato State) pitched the ninth to earn his eighth save.

The game with the Express was also the season finale between the two division rivals. The Mallards will now travel to Wausau to start a one-game series with the Woodchucks at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at Athletic Park.
