SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters picked up their seventh win of the season with a 3-1 victory over the Somerset Patriots. Cory VanAllen picked up his Atlantic League-leading third win of the season and Beamer Weems aided the effort with stellar defensive play and an RBI double.

Matt Maloney turned in a stellar start on the rubber, throwing 6.2 innings and yielding one run on six hits and no walks. The southpaw struck out a pair in the quality start.

Beamer Weems made a trio of spectacular defensive plays in the contest. In the top of the fifth, the shortstop erased a would-be leadoff single with a jump-throw deep in the hole. In the sixth, the Virginia Beach native made a basket catch down the left field line with a runner on base and two outs to save a run. Finally, Weems snagged a line drive in the top of the eighth to take away a hit from Thomas Neal.

Sugar Land scratched across the first run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth. Patrick Palmeiro led off the frame with a single through the left side before moving up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amadeo Zazueta. Dustin Martin grounded out to the right side to move Palmeiro 90-feet away from home. Beamer Weems roped a 0-1 offering from Zielinski into the right-center alley to plate the first run of the game.

Somerset matched the Skeeter's run in the top of the seventh. Aharon Eggleston picked up his second hit of the game on a single up the middle. The Patriots left fielder advanced to second on a wild pitch and up to third on a throwing error from Chris Wallace. Robert Andino lifted a fly ball into right, deep enough to score Eggleston from third and knot up the contest.

The Skeeters took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth. Zazueta poked a single just past the outstretched glove of the Patriots first basemen. Martin extended his hitting streak to six games with a broken bat single up the middle to move the go-ahead run into scoring position. After a Weems' popup in the infield, Delwyn Young slapped a double down the left field line, just inside the third base bag, scoring Zazueta and giving Sugar Land a 2-1 advantage. 00Wallace pulled a single over the head of the Somerset first basemen, scoring Martin and giving the Skeeters a 3-1 advantage going to the ninth.

Adrian Martin picked up his fourth save of the year with a scoreless ninth, despite surrendering a pair of singles.

Andrew Carnignan took the loss for Somerset, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk.
