
Matt Nokes, Mike Timlin Will Play in Legends Game

(Bridgeport, Conn. - May 5, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced that former Yankee Matt Nokes and former Red Sox player Mike Timlin will play during the Heroes for Heroes Legends Game at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday, July 9th. Nokes joins Jesse Barfield, Charlie Hayes and Jim Leyritz on the Yankees Roster, and Timlin will join "Oil Can" Boyd, Ellis Burks and Bill "Spaceman" Lee for the Red Sox. More players will be announced in the coming weeks.
Matt Nokes began his Major League career with the San Francisco Giants, making his debut in 1985 after being picked in the 20th round of the 1981 MLB draft. The next year, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers where he spent almost five complete seasons. He began the 1990 season with the Tigers, but was traded to the New York Yankees midway through. He spent the next four campaigns with the Yankees, and in 1995, his final year in the Majors, he spent time with both the Baltimore Orioles and the Colorado Rockies. During his 11 seasons in the Majors, Nokes collected a .254 batting average with 136 home runs and 422 RBI. His best season came in 1987, where he hit .289 with 32 home runs and 87 RBI. That year, Matt played in the Major League All-Star game and was also awarded the Silver Slugger Award. While with the Yankees, Nokes caught Jim Abbott's no-hitter on September 4th, 1993.
Mike Timlin made his Major League debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1991. He spent seven seasons with the Blue Jays before being traded to the Seattle Mariners during the 1997 season. In 1999, Mike was traded to the Baltimore Orioles, and then to the St. Louis Cardinals during the 2000 campaign where he stayed until 2002, finishing that year with the Philadelphia Phillies. In 2003, Timlin made his debut with the Boston Red Sox, where he spent six seasons before retiring in 2009. While with the Red Sox, he collected 30 wins and 27 saves with a 3.76 ERA and 273 strikeouts. Timlin is a four time World Series Champion, winning rings in 1992 and 1993 with the Blue Jays and collecting two more in 2004 and 2007 with the Red Sox. His best season came in 2005, as he recorded a career-high 81 appearances and a career-low ERA of 2.24, allowing only two home runs in 80.1 innings. In 2006, Mike was a member of the United States World Baseball Classic roster.
Proceeds from the Heroes for Heroes Legends Game will benefit ABRI/Homes for the Brave, a nonprofit based right here in Bridgeport that is dedicated to improving the lives of homeless individuals, especially Veterans.
