Pitching & Defence Lead to Walk-Off

June 13, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers used great pitching and defence to set up a walk-off home run in defeating the Victoria Seals 1-0 before 2241 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Starter Anastacio Martinez tossed seven innings of shutout baseball and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning with two outs. Out of the bullpen both Rene Miniel and Claudio Galva (1-0) threw scoreless innings with Galva picking up the victory.

A couple of great defensive plays were made in the fourth inning as Calgary's Drew Miller made a leaping catch at the wall and Kevin Price dove horizontally to snag a groundball destined for the outfield and then preceded to get to his feet and throw out the runner at first base.

In the seventh inning with a runner on second base Victoria singled out to right field where Jonny Kaplan came up throwing to the plate and with help from a terrific diving tag by catcher Luis Taveras the game remained scoreless. An inning later Kaplan was back at it again with a runner on second base he made a full speed running catch on the warning track to keep the game tied.

The pitching and defence setup the game winning home run from Julio Ramirez in the bottom of the ninth inning. Leading off, Ramirez took the second pitch over the left field wall for his team high sixth round tripper of the year.

With the victory the Vipers improve to 13-6 on the Golden Baseball League season and are in second place in the North Division, two and a half games back of the Chico Outlaws.
