Victoria Seals News Release

Calgary, AB - Fresh off of their first road win of the season, the Victoria Seals returned to Foothills Stadium on Sunday afternoon for the second game of a two-game set against the Calgary Vipers. Handing the ball to Jeff Duda (0-0) for the Canadian's first professional start, the Seals faced off against Anastacio Martinez (1-2) for the second time this season.

Dominant pitching early on left both teams without a hit through four innings of play. The first team to advance a runner to third was the Vipers, loading the bases with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Working himself out of a jam, however, Duda kept his shutout rolling with a strikeout - one of seven in the game.

Victoria's best chance of the game came in the top of the seventh inning when a base hit from Matt Kavanaugh sent Brian Rios charging home from second, but a throw from right fielder Jonny Kaplan beat Rios to the plate, ending the Seals threat.

With Calgary pressing again in the bottom of the eighth inning, Victoria catcher Matt Kavanaugh found the third out with a near-perfect throw to second base, picking off Guillermo Reyes to send the game into the ninth inning scoreless.

After the Seals failed to take the lead in the top of the frame, the Vipers polished off game two on just the second pitch in the bottom of the ninth. With Andrew Arreola on in relief, the Seals pitcher surrendered a solo home run to left field off the bat of Julio Ramirez, handing Calgary the 1-0 walk-off win.

Jeff Duda drew a brilliant no decision in his first career start, while Andrew Arreola took the loss for the Seals and Claudio Galva claimed his first win of the year for the Vipers. Julio Ramirez' fifth home run of the year was the difference for the home side, while Matt Kavanaugh went 2-for-4 in only the second shutout loss in Seals history.

Victoria now travels north to Edmonton ahead of a three-game series at Telus Field against the Capitals, beginning tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. (PT). The contest will broadcast live via www.victoriaseals.ca.
