Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB -- The famous line in the classic baseball movie Field Of Dreams says "If you build it, he will come." Both the Orange County Flyers and Edmonton Capitals thought they had built up leads only to have the other team claw it's way back. There were six lead changes before Edmonton pulled out a 10 - 9 victory in eleven innings in a very entertaining tilt. A gorgeous night brought out the fans in droves Saturday night as 3,074 people turned out to watch the Edmonton Capitals grind out the win and take the series against Orange County four games to one.
An early 3 - 1 lead by the Flyers was quickly erased by the Caps as they began to chip away in the middle innings of the game. A single to right field by second baseman Alex Chavez scored Ryan Stevenson in the third to make it 3 - 2. It was Chavez's first professional RBI. Edmonton then took a 6 - 4 lead in the middle innings before surrendering it in the seventh as the Flyers scored three runs on four hits. The Caps responded in the bottom half when Chavez lined a pitch into right for a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly. A two out error by second baseman Jimmy Rohan then allowed Tom Collaro to score all the way from first to re-establish the Capital lead at 8 - 7.
After Orange County scored one in the ninth to tie the game and another in the tenth to take the lead, Edmonton loaded the bases with one out. Another single by Chavez scored Jorge Cortes, but catcher Josh Tarnow was thrown out at the plate trying to score the winner. The game finally ended on a long double off the wall in center by third baseman Cliff Brumbaugh bringing home Tom Collaro for the hard fought 10 - 9 victory.
"It was an outstanding ball game," stated Capitals Director of Baseball Operations Gord Gerlach. "Our team showed a lot of emotion tonight and once a group like ours gets involved in a game like that, I think it gives us an opportunity to come together as a team and have the confidence to know we can compete on any day, even after a game like yesterday's."
After the game, fans were treated to the EZ Rock Saturday night movie, Field of Dreams.
On the first Carpool Monday of the year, the Caps open a three game series with the Victoria Seals. Any vehicle with four or more people will be able to park at the game for free. In Tuesday's second game, fans will be able to come down to the park and enjoy Family Vision Care $2 all you can drink slushies.
The Edmonton Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment.
